No word just yet on a release date, but because they’re pretty much all done filming-wise, there shouldn’t be a huge gap between seasons 1 and 2 (thank goodness!). Known as heihaizi or “black children,” those children can’t access public services and don’t legally exist. While some parents of illegal second children placed their children for adoption, had their children taken from them, or paid the government’s fines, others simply didn’t register to get their children government ID documents. The government also forcibly sterilized people, mostly women, and mandated contraceptive use once couples had the maximum number of children allowed. The policy was enforced sporadically, though, and some people were able to apply for exceptions to have a second child. While the policy was in place from 1980 to 2015, the Chinese government levied huge fines on families who had more than one child. This is my first encounter with Dennis Lehane, but I'm sure it won't be my last. The narrator really captured the essence of the story. When I got to the last couple of hours, I couldn't stop listening because both the story and the narration had become so dramatic. The narrator's pace fits the story perfectly. The audio book edition of Shutter Island is exceptional. Think about how "Sixth Sense" becomes a different movie on second viewing, but it's somehow richer when you know how it ends.
